There are 2 different applications for these species of alternators.
Traction alternators, which power is laid out to the power of the prime mover diesel engine of the main drive (power range from app. 1000 to 3000 kVA).
The second apllication is as an auxilliary alternator (power range from 25 to 80 kVA) which is made for suppliance of various consumer as air conditioner, light and so on.
Traction Alternators:Built in in the electric-room of the locomotive this alternator is specially design for the operation in diesel-electric locomotives. It is a three phase synchronous alternator with an attached exciter machine and an integrated rectifier bridge. This alternator is driven by a diesel engine with variable speed from 700 to 1800 rpm. Auxilliary Alternators: | This alternators are underframe-mounted (exposed to all environmental conditions) or inside the locomotion. They are made to supply all auxilliary consumer of a train and are driven by hydrostatic motors at constant speed. |
